Here are the most notable races on Democratic and Republican primary ballots across the Houston area. In general, we highlighted contests that have attracted the most attention from activists, local groups, donors and influential figures.

Our list is made up of federal, state and local primaries, many involving incumbents fighting for political survival or wide-open contests to replace lawmakers who aren’t running for re-election. We separated the races into three informal groups, led by the “hottest races,” or those that have generated the most drama and intrigue. We confined the list to districts that include Harris County or an adjacent county, along with the statewide contests.
Republican primary ballots in Harris County, by contrast, include 15 contested primaries in those same 41 legislative districts. While the party’s most conservative wing — including far-right Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene — has lined up behind political operative Christian Collins, former Navy SEAL Morgan Luttrell is backed by Greene’s nemesis of late, Houston-area congressman Dan Crenshaw, along with the main super PAC affiliated with House GOP leadership. Collins, meanwhile, has received support from a super PAC aligned with the right-wing House Freedom Caucus.
The candidates are trial lawyer Patrick Gurski, who previously served as chief of staff to former Houston state Rep.
