The killer dwarf who murdered a spinster and hung her beloved dog from the bedpost
As worried friends knocked on the door of eccentric spinster Ruth Clarkson, on June 22, 1936, an eerie silence befell them.
Detective Superintendent Linaker and Detective Chief Inspector Fenton called at the house to check on Ruth. The door had been forced open, but had been locked on the way out. As they entered the house, the officers were met with a gruesome sight. Despite the cluttered and chaotic mess of Ruth's house, officers quickly determined her bedroom had been ransacked and items of jewellery stolen. They quickly formed the opinion Ruth had been murdered in the course of a robbery, with her dog kicked to death for good measure.
At just over four feet tall, and severely bow-legged, Haslam's job opportunities were limited. With little in the way of education, and no chance of manual labour, the dwarf had turned to a life of crime. His first conviction was for stealing oranges and by the time of Ruth's murder he had three convictions to his name.
A number of scratches, found around Haslam's ears, appeared to have been caused by fingernails during a struggle. His index finger bore a wound which looked to be a dog bite, and a bloody palm print, left on the chair in Ruth's room, matched one taken from Haslam for analysis. A blood stain was also found on the toe cap of his boot.
