It's doubtful that the Dallas Mavericks have the ability or interest to trade for LeBron James. And they probably shouldn’t even if they could. tim_cato shares why:
. Even if the Lakers change their minds, it’s unlikely that the franchise would offer him as many years or as much money as Dallas can. That might rule out Irving’s interest in moving to L.A. before we even touch on the salary-cap complications it would take to acquire James and the Mavericks’ willingness to assist in a sign-and-trade.
Again, there’s nothing unpredictable about the Mavericks being able and willing to pay Irving more than any other franchise this summer. If he plans to re-sign with the Mavericks, it’s obvious he would want the best players possible as his teammates. When Dallas hired Nico Harrison as general manager and Jason Kidd as head coach in the summer of 2021, it was clearly enunciated that the team valued the respected relationships both figures had with other star players around the league.
on Monday that the Mavericks were interested in James at last season’s deadline when the Lakers’ season was flailing. That could not have happened — James was ineligible to be traded within six months of signing his extension, a time period which had not yet been reached before the trade deadline had passed.
While Dallas prepares for its upcoming negotiations with Irving, the front office surely wants the most leverage possible to potentially sign Irving to a friendlier contract if possible. They have now been linked to a player that Irving desires to play with again. That may or may not matter to Irving’s contractual desires, but it can’t hurt.for a meatier analysis of the implications of this reported conversation.
