The Last Of Us series will not be as gory as the game. 'HBO very early on was, ‘Let’s take out all the violence except for the very essential.’ That allowed the violence to have even more impact than in the game.'

The Last of Us TV show has one major difference from the game, says creator Neil Druckmann. HBO's anticipated adaptation of the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game was developed for television by Chernobyl's Craig Mazin and Druckmann, the latter of which created the game.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a recent interview with SFX magazine , Druckmann said The Last of Us TV show scales back significantly on the violence compared to the games. The show's co-creator and Naughty Dog co-president explained their rationale for reducing the violence. Read his full explanation below:

We need a certain amount of action, or violence, that we could use for mechanics so you could connect with Joel and get into a flow state. Then you would really feel like you’re connected with this on-screen avatar and you’re seeing the world through his eyes. But that doesn’t exist in a passive medium. One of the things that I loved hearing from [co-creator Craig Mazin] and HBO very early on was, ‘Let’s take out all the violence except for the very essential.

Based on Druckmann's comments, it seems he and co-creator Craig Mazin decided the games depicted a bit too much violence for a TV show, even for HBO. By reducing the number of violent moments, The Last of Us show should help audiences connect more with Joel and Ellie's story and when the series does depict violence, it should be more impactful. This will hopefully allow the HBO show to achieve a better balance of action, violence, drama, and intimate character moments.

While the extreme amount of violence in The Last of Us functions well in the format of an animated video game, it may come off differently in the world of live-action, where it could run the risk of appearing cartoonish and take audiences out of the grounded and serious story Mazin and Druckmann are trying to tell. While the rationale for reducing the violence is reasonable, it remains to be seen how this change works out for the HBO adaptation.
