But where losses would cause particular alarm is the more traditional Tory seats. If the Tories have lots support in the red wall, they can’t afford the same to happen closer to home. “We are starting from a defensive position so we need to show we can hold these seats before we worry about building back support in the red wall,” explains one government aide.
. The party hopes to win control of West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, Stratford and Cherwell in Oxfordshire. There are also hopes that if things go right they could gain ground in areas where they already run the council such as Esher and Walton. This is former deputy prime minister Dominic Raab’s seat and any progress would help the party to build momentum as they seek to oust Raab as a key target in the general election.
Often the two sides feel as though they have competing interests. In red wall seats, Conservative MPs tend to prefer a more robust comms approach along with a focus on culture war issues. In contrast, blue wall MPs are often more opposed to planning reforms and more likely to talk up Net Zero achievements.
