With her gravelly voice and probing questions, Marian Finucane was an unmistakable fixture on Irish radio for nearly half a century.As tributes flowed in from public figures across Ireland on Thursday, news of her sudden death at 69 came as a cruel New Year blow to her family, but also to the national broadcaster, still grieving the loss of Gay Byrne in November.
But the seasoned journalist she was, she almost always got an answer in the end, regardless of the interviewee. On Gay Byrne’s retirement in 1999, she took over his early morning radio slot to present The Marian Finucane Show. Ditching the traditional white gown, Marian made headlines when she wore a purple dress under a grey coat topped off with a fedora hat while her new husband wore a black three-piece suit.
The RTE radio host prided herself on being extremely protective about her private life and rarely talked about her other half.
