The official gender pension gap is 35% A gender pension gap wikipedia page lists eight causes behind the gap, but they are missing the main one, which is a deep-seated cultural perception that women are ‘the caring sex’ 🖋️ Becky O’Connor

This notion of caring being a woman’s role is at the heart of a number of other underlying assumptions, mainly among employers, which will continue to sustain the gender pay and pension gaps. A couple of examples:

Or how about a male employee in his mid thirties or early forties who needs a higher salary to support the family he has at home? Research has shown that once men become fathers their pay increases. Is this because they ask for promotions and pay increases at this point? Do they work harder because of the extra responsibility? Result? Men in general in this age bracket are more likely to get pay rises.

I don’t think you are naturally more caring if you are born with an extra X chromosome, but what I do know is that women have the same bills to pay as men. You don’t get smaller mortgages or cheaper food shopping because you are a woman. They’ve also got retirements to fund – just like men. Their economic burden is no different to men’s and since their state pension entitlement age is also the same as men’s now, it is vital we resolve the imbalance in private pension provision.
