Explore the intriguing story of Milo, Lord Talbot de Malahide, the last lord of Malahide Castle, whose life was marked by secrets, accusations of espionage, and a passion for botany.
The last lord of Malahide Castle , Milo , Lord Talbot de Malahide, lived a life shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Tony Scotland's new book, Undercover: Two Secret Lives, delves into the author's own involvement with Milo and the unusual circumstances surrounding his life. Milo inherited the castle in 1948 and served as ambassador to Laos before retiring in his 40s.
He specialized in counter-intelligence, but accusations of espionage arose after two of his colleagues, who were gay, defected to Russia. These allegations, fueled by the prevailing societal view of gay men as security risks, cast a shadow over Milo's legacy. After retirement, Milo divided his time between Malahide and an estate in Tasmania, dedicating himself to collecting rare plants. His passion for botany is a testament to his enduring fascination with the natural world. After his death in 1972, the castle was sold to Fingal County Council, which now maintains it as a local amenity
