🎥 Norway’s rugged coastline looms large in the final season of ‘Succession’
Framed by towering cliffs and illuminated by a straining late-winter sun, seven or eight sea eagles swoop among the gulls above a fishing boat. They cut impressive silhouettes against the pale blue sky, soaring elegantly between the crowing gulls. The mountains, the birds, the blues: there is a sense of drama along the coastline of Norway, the second-longest in the world after Canada , which I am travelling over the course of six days with a new cruise line, Havila Voyages.
Generally speaking, cruise ships do not tread lightly. Not only do they burn vast quantities of CO2-emitting fuel and expend copious energy, they also dump sewage into the sea. However, recent Norwegian legislation means that from 2026, all cruise ships entering the Unesco heritage sites Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord must be emission-free.
This far north – the ship crosses the Arctic Circle on day four – you witness not only the beauty of nature but the mysteries beyond our atmosphere. Depending on the season, you are likely to see either the Northern Lights or the midnight sun on a coastal voyage.Being unpredictable, and with their visibility dependent on cloud cover, seeing the Northern Lights feels like a stroke of luck, though certain times of year – November to February, and March for its clear skies – offer better chances.
