Episcopal's Steve Leisz tells story of his three-hour dinner with Mike Leach, who died Monday.
One of the napkins Mike Leach used to draw up plays while having dinner with Episcopal High School football coach Steve Leisz in 2010.Nearly 13 years ago, Steve Leisz came up with a wild plan he knew had little chance of working. One of his coworkers was an acquaintance of Mike Leach, so the Episcopal High School head football coach told him to ask the famed college mastermind if he’d be interested in becoming Leisz’s offensive coordinator.
"I figured he’s crazy enough, he’ll probably take the job, if we have a good conversation," said Leisz, who had previously met the quirky coach at various clinics and during recruiting visits. The dinner went well enough that Leach made Leisz believe he would be wearing an Episcopal coach's shirt in the fall if only he hadn't just bought a house in Florida and already accepted a role as a college football radio host at SiriusXM.Even though the nice dinner didn't result in a new job, it's still a fond memory for Leisz, who saved the cocktail napkins he and Leach used throughout the three-hour meal scratching out all kinds of offensive and defensive Xs and Os.
"We probably killed about 20 napkins that night," said Leisz — who dug out the scraps, one of which is autographed by Leach, Tuesday after learning of the coach's passing."We just drew up a lot of different plays, a lot of different coverages. I can’t believe I saved them."Years ago, I offered Coach Leach the OC job at EHS thinking he is just crazy enough to take it.
