It would be tricky to reboot TheOffice, says showrunner Greg Daniels. 'The content was very much pitched for... when people weren’t as sensitive to what is giving offense to people... you could have a boss who kept putting his foot in it.'

The showrunner for The Office has spoken out to explain why the beloved sitcom would be hard to reboot. The Office is a mockumentary style sitcom that aired from 2005 to 2013. Some consider it to be one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, with its boorish humor and candid style.

Many credit The Office as a turning point for many writers and performers producing big titles today. Mindy Kaling, who starred as Kelly Kapoor and was a writer for the show, has gone on to create shows like The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever, and more recently, is writing Legally Blonde 3. Writer and producer Michael Schur also gained a lot of notability from The Office, which he used to create other iconic sitcoms like The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

"When people hear “reboot,” they think it’s the exact same show. I don’t think that would work. I also think that the content was very much pitched for that period of time, when people weren’t as sensitive to what is giving offense to people so that you could have a boss who kept putting his foot in it. You could feel that the content was sort of helping people see things as being offensive that they might not have seen as offensive before, because they were just used to it.

While he doesn't believe a reboot of The Office would work, Daniels also said that there are aspects of the show that he thinks can continue to work."I would take [the] documentary format and the idea that it is an examination from a documentarian’s perspective." Daniels has replicated that format on Parks and Recreation, which he created and produced.

While it's safe to assume that most fans of The Office will be disappointed by Daniels effectively shutting down any hopes for the shows return, all is not lost. Many of the stars and writers are still creating interesting and entertaining new shows, films, and shorts to go watch. With"reboot culture" being so prevalent in recent years, it may be time to allow new titles to grow. Titles like ABC's Abbott Elementary, which is also done in a mockumentary style.
