Time is not on our side for one crucial issue in Nottinghamshire that Keir Starmer has pledged to rectify
Keir Starmer has got a lot on. Rishi Sunak may be using the dying days of his Tory leadership to try and paint a slightly rosy picture of the Labour government's inheritance, but even those jostling to succeed him describe many parts of our country as being broken.
Issues surrounding the pension pot arose after it was privatised in 1994, with the Government establishing an arrangement where it would split surplus money 50:50 with the mineworkers. Miners were told that no more than £2 billion was needed to help shore up the pot for the future, but successive Governments have received over £4 billion in cash payments so far.
Labour's manifesto did not say specifically what it will do about the surplus generated since 1994, only pledging to review the "unfair" arrangements. A parliamentary committee previously recommended that the government should relinquish billions and return surplus money to the miners, describing the 50:50 arrangement as "unconscionable".
Yet whatever else is going on, we simply can't hang around on this issue. We are losing ex-miners every day and too many of them are dying in poverty.
