Alicia Kaori never dreamed she’d be playing the lead role of Maria, the earnest young nun-turned-governess, in the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, “The Sound of Music.”
Amber Mak, artistic producer and new works development director at the Paramount Theatre, is directing.“The Sound of Music” is the story of would-be nun Maria, who is sent by her convent to be the governess of a Navy captain’s seven children. She grows to love the entire family, including widower Captain von Trapp. Meanwhile, their homeland of Austria is on the brink of entering World War II in 1938 and the family must make some tough decisions.
“For me, doing such a big role, it was nice to be somewhat grounded in the character already,” she said. “It’s been nice — I’ve liked having a bit of a leg up in getting to know Maria because of that.” “Working with the young performers is so wonderful,” Kaori agreed. “The energy sharing is flowing. They feed my energy and vice versa. They’re just so excited to be there. They’re just little professionals.”“We’ve had great discussions about the history and the context, when the show was taking place and what does that mean,” Mak said. “And also getting them to understand what was going on at the time as they approach being surrounded by Nazis and what does that mean.
