A plan is underway to get Manchester the Ten O’Clock News a lot more regularly - and for the right reasons.
What’s going on? Broadly Manchester’s top brass want the city to host more conferences and conventions, which bring together the aforementioned corners of society for the good of the city’s economy. Shaun and his team put the rise in numbers down to large-scale conferences, like Housing 2023, where Andy Burnham announced new policy; the British Insurance Brokers' Association Conference; and the DTX technology conference.
“They might have clashed with other events so we have not had the ability [to do both]. With the pandemic, it opened up the opportunity for new events coming into Manchester Central.” Co-founder Jake Davies, 23, explained: “The reason we started this convention was to go against bigger ones who raise ticket prices and are being money-grabbers. It’s now more than £100 for a bigger convention ticket.”
“When we get academics in a space, it does attract commercial investment,” Hinds explained. “We have examples of people’s businesses that have thrived as a result of a chance meeting at a conference here. We can act as that catalyst.”
