The Princess of Wales is starting to mould the monarchy in her image ✒️ jenniebond1 for ipaperviews

Compare that with the image of a young King Charles, always immaculately dressed in a way that was totally incompatible with the rough-and-tumble of a fun-filled childhood. Picture him as a three-year-old standing at a train station, welcoming his parents back from a lengthy overseas tour and receiving a peck on the cheek and a pat on the head from his mother. It’s not that she didn’t love him, it’s just that overt shows of emotion were not her way of parenting.

Diana’s sudden death, though, caused both William and Harry to subdue their raw emotions. Traumatised by their loss, they nevertheless had toBoth have now married women who in very different ways have encouraged their husbands toCatherine was a key player in setting up thecampaign with William and Harry. By talking about their mental health and encouraging others to do the same, they changed the conversation around a topic that used to carry such a stigma.

With Catherine as his partner, William is bringing up the next generation of royal children in a very different way. The impression they give is of a household full of the usual noise, chaos, squabbles and joy of ordinary family life. They dance around the kitchen at breakfast time, their parents take them to school, they romp around the garden and they live in a relatively normal house on the Windsor estate.

I have no doubt that around the dinner table George, Charlotte and Louis are encouraged to talk about everything that’s happened during the day – and how they feel about it. They may be royal, but their childhood could not be more different to their paternal grandfather’s who – partly because our late Queen was so tied up with her work – saw more of his nannies than his parents. It’s certainly a healthier upbringing and, with Catherine’s expert guiding hand, the next generation of royalty will hopefully be less damaged by the extraordinarily strange destiny into which they have been born.
