What was expected to be a race to replace Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will now be a coronation as all other senior ministers in the party ruled themselves out
It has been assumed for years that it was a case of when Simon Harris would become Fine Gael leader rather than if.
Born in Greystones in 1986, he is the eldest of three siblings. His brother Adam is the founder and CEO of autism charity AsIaAm. Leinster House started to call in 2008 and Harris began working as an assistant to his future cabinet colleague Frances Fitzgerald when she was a member of the Seanad. In 2009, Harris was elected to Wicklow County Council and simultaneously elected to Greystones Town Council. In 2011, he was elected as a TD for Wicklow. As the youngest deputy in the 31st Dáil aged just 24, he nominated Enda Kenny for Taoiseach.
While his handling of the scandal was criticised multiple times, he was praised for ordering an immediate investigation into the issue despite calls from then-Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan not to. He often shares pictures of Saoirse, 5, and Cillian, 3, the children he shares with his wife Caoimhe whom he married in 2017. All of his Instagram posts are signed off “Simon”, and he was one of the first Cabinet ministers to adapt to a platform like TikTok.
