The Sandman is missing a key character — Who is the Prodigal?
If there's anything we've learned from the Endless siblings it's that all families, even the supernatural ones, have their pockets of dysfunction. InTheir… desire… to bring titular character and sibling Morpheus to ruin goes to extremes. Not only were they complicit in Morpheus's century-long detainment, they also almost pulled off a dastardly plan to have Morpheus unwittingly kill one of their own. An event, we're assured, that would have reaped dire consequences.
The Prodigal is the only Endless whose absence implies something more unsettling is rumbling beneath the surface.Who is the Prodigal? The Prodigal, also known as Destruction, is the fourth eldest Endless sibling after Destiny, Death and Dream. Like all of the Endless siblings he has a purpose and that purpose is – surprise! – to destroy. His destruction however, allows for new things to be created.
As comic-book lore goes, the invention of the atomic bomb did nothing to alleviate his worries. The Prodigal did not want to be responsible for mass obliteration and so abandoned his realm.
