HAVING AT one point had an eight point lead over eventual champions, Manchester City, many have questioned just why Arsenal slipped up to finish second. The Gunners led the way for most of the season, only to fall short during the run-in.Inexperience and squad depth Arsenal won a club record 50 points from their opening 19 Premier League matches in 2022-23 compared to just 34 points in the second half , while Manchester City took 40 out of a possible 42 during the business end of the season and – crucially – beat the Gunners twice to put the title race in their hands.
Although many players dipped in and out of form throughout the ten months, it was clear that a number of key players were not performing to the dizzying heights set earlier in the campaign. Including the World Cup, Bukayo Saka has made over 50 appearances this season but ran out of steam in the final ten games. Thomas Partey and Aleksandr Zinchenko were both superb in numerous games prior to the Qatar showcase but also dropped off significantly.
Thomas Partey’s failed flick against West Ham to give the ball away, Bukayo Saka’s missed penalty to go 3-1 up in the same game, Granit Xhaka’s indiscipline versus Liverpool a week earlier, an Aaron Ramsdale error allowing Southampton to score in the first minute…the list could go on. Or is this all hiding the fact that The Emirates is no longer a fortress – just four clean sheets at home all season is the second worst behind the Saints.
