of the rare lot in the house’s fashion sale today. The Givenchy haute couture white point d’esprit ballgown is an exquisite exemplar of Golden Age fashion, and the
of its wearer. Measuring just 20.5 inches at the waist, and cinched with the sweetest baby-blue satin bow, the sequin-dotted dress of course belongs to Audrey Hepburn., in which Hepburn plays an innocent waif who falls for the charms of Gary Cooper’s old-school business tycoon, the dress steals the spotlight during the opera scene, during which Cooper as Frank Flannagan is peak playboy and Hepburn as Ariane Chavasse is painted as her most naive.
Hepburn’s best costumes are always linked to Hubert de Givenchy, with whom she collaborated from 1954’sonwards, but few perhaps know that the gamine star shared her beloved Givenchy with others. When commissioning her couturier friend, Audrey requested that extra-large seams were inserted in the clothing, so they could be easily altered to suit her friends. Afterwrapped, Hepburn gifted this particular princessy dress to Tanja Star-Busmann, who had just given birth to her daughter.
Hepburn with her quintessential Givenchy “Audrey” dress, painstakingly crafted by her friend, Hubert.Three years later in 1961, Star-Busmann lent the whimsical Givenchy to her nanny, who extricated the lace trim and swapped the front ribbon for three mini back bows concealing the panel inserted to make the dress bigger. Fast forward to 2009, and it was the nanny from whom Kerry Taylor acquired the dress, along with a number of other quintessential Hepburn designs she had given her inner circle.
