The Red Lion offered a tranquil stay away from the hecticness of city life
Nestled within the rolling hills and greenery of the Yorkshire Dales sits the Red Lion. The 16th century coaching inn, with creeping foliage covering its sandstone exterior, looks like the quintessential British pub. It's also the gateway to a cosy yet premium stay, with its own B&B - the Manor House - offering undoubtedly the best riverside view in the Yorkshire Dales.
Accessed via a well-signposted footpath, the Manor House, which, dating back to 1883, is newer than the pub, has been thoughtfully designed and renovated throughout, all while keeping its authentic, period charm. After a short stroll across the grounds and car park back to the pub, my partner and I were seated and handed menus offering an impressive range of dishes - far wider than catering to all appetites and dietary requirements, including vegans and vegetarians.
For the most part, the food was superb. The parfait was soft and scooped out of its glass jar and spread over the bread with ease; the lamb shoulder was tasty and succulent, quite literally falling apart as I stabbed in my fork, and my dessert was the perfect sweet end to the meal, with the burnt orange peel and ice cream adding the perfect balance of tartness.
The Red Lion boasts a dining terrace overlooking the river and bridge for alfresco dining or drinking - perfect for sunnier days. Meanwhile inside, guests can enjoy a cosy and snug drink in one of the smaller rooms, or a meal in the larger and modern dining areas which are also used as the breakfast serving area for overnight guests.
A vast choice of food awaited once again at breakfast. I had a busy day ahead, so wanted to make sure I was set for the long drive that awaited me. And, to my delight, gone was the all-too-familiar scrap for some sad looking eggs and bacon at a buffet counter, as we were instead handed menus.
