🎧 Listen: In today’s episode of The Journal podcast, AnneMarieSteele explains how overwhelming demand for presale tickets to Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” throttled Ticketmaster’s website and left millions of fans unable to buy them

This transcript was prepared by a transcription service. This version may not be in its final form and may be updated.Anne Steele: I did.Anne Steele: But I actually had to get them through a friend. I myself was not able to get them. And let me tell you, I was-

Anne Steele: For a lot of people, this is their favorite artist in the world, and maybe they've been saving up for a ticket, or waiting out the pandemic, waiting for her to go back on tour. So it's a real bummer for them to spend all day trying to get a ticket and coming up empty. Anne Steele: Taylor Swift loves her fans. She is obsessed with them. And she works so hard to give them the best show that she can. It is just like the biggest pop spectacular thing you'll ever see. Every single song is like a music video on the stage. The production is incredible, the dancers are incredible, and these lyrics, that have deeply, deeply touched fans over the years, to have Taylor Swift on the stage, singing those to you in person, is just like a really special experience.

Anne Steele: Definitely not fearless. I don't think anybody thought it was going to be easy. I think fans could sense the demand among other fans. The Taylor Swift fandom is very, very, online and very aware of itself and each other and other fans. So I think it was clear that there was going to be a lot of hustle to get these tickets.

Ryan Knutson: Fred and his daughter weren't able to get the verified fan codes. Fortunately though, Fred had another chance. On Wednesday, tickets went on sale for Capital One credit card holders, which Fred happened to be. But pretty quickly he ran into issues. Ryan Knutson: So for a lot of Taylor Swift's fans, they're going to have a cruel summer, sounds like.

Speaker 7: I'm really disappointed in Ticketmaster, and I quite honestly feel kind of bad for Taylor Swift because she's got a lot of really upset fans right now. Anne Steele: Ticketmaster controls some 70 to 80% of the ticketing market in the United States. And a lot of people feel that that's not actually a competitive environment. And when you don't have a competitive environment, there's not as much incentive to innovate and make the fan experience better.
