It was there and then that, its name immortalized by Watergate pseudonyms and trashy shot glasses, had its premiere, 50 years ago, on New York’s West 49th Street. Though beaten to the theaters by Andy Warhol’sand a few others, Gerard Damiano’s feature-length sword-swallowing extravaganza pushed the genre past the point of no return.
