In a shock move by RTE, it was confirmed that Ryan Tubridy would not be returning to his RTE Radio 1 on Thursday night.
Director General Kevin Bakhurst said that despite being nearly at the finish line of finalising their agreement "trust between the parties" broke down.
However talks collapsed when the former Late Late Show host released a statement in response to the second Grant Thornton report, which was published yesterday. “It is also clear that my actual income from RTE in 2020 and 2021 matches what was originally published as my earnings for those years and RTÉ has not yet published its top ten earner details for 2022.“I am committed to re-establishing the confidence and trust of my colleagues and listeners, and I hope that any fair assessment of the findings of today’s report will help in this regard.
Figures published in June found that Ryan’s salary was €466,250 in 2020. However, he was also given an additional €56,250 that was not included. One RTÉ source told the Irish Independent that Tubridy’s statement welcoming this week’s Grant Thornton report into the controversy was “tone deaf” in a situation where all sides had agreed on “a fresh start”.
