Rally falls short as Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards scores a career-high 49 points

The Spurs trailed 64-57 at halftime after suffering a letdown following their win at Denver on Tuesday that allowed them to clinch a berth in the West’s play-in tournament after the Los Angeles Lakers lost at Phoenix later that night. Edwards, the first pick of the 2020 draft, entered the third quarter with 32 points. Striving for 50, he shot an inefficient 4 of 11 in the period, including missing four 3-pointers in the final 66 seconds. He eventually sank two free throws with 9.1 seconds left to hit 49.
Karl-Anthony Towns, who scored 21 after notching a career-high 60 in a win over the Spurs last month, grabbed the rebound and sank two free throws to seal the win for Minnesota . Despite the poor showing, the Spurs remain confident he will eventually start draining shots from beyond the arc and long twos like the one he missed late against Minnesota.
