The Pope's condition remains critical as the Vatican issued a statement after the Pontiff spent his ninth consecutive night in hospital after being diagnosed with double pneumonia

The Vatican have warned that Pope Francis is not "out of danger" as he spent his ninth night in hospital last night.

In a statement issued on Sunday morning, the Vatican has said: "The condition of the Holy Father continues to be critical. Therefore, as explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger. This morning, Pope Francis experienced an asthma-like respiratory crisis of prolonged intensity, which required the administration of high-flow oxygen.

Pope Francis is especially prone to lung infections due to developing pleurisy - an inflammation around the lungs - as an adult and having part of one of his lungs removed at age 21. During his 12 years as leader of the Roman Catholic church, the Argentine has been hospitalised several times, including in March 2023 when he spent three nights in hospital with bronchitis.
