It’s a week of few highs and many lows at Sicily’s least relaxing hotel
, spent with hard drugs and the hotel’s resident party girls, Lucia and Isabella . What’s worse than a hangover? A guilty conscience. Cameron slept with Lucia, while Ethan kissed Isabella. The college friends, harbouring various levels of regret, hastily invoke the bro code. But the subterfuge is no match for Harper , who’s been calling Ethan non-stop, and then finds a condom in their bedroom.
A different, more rushed show might have had Harper confront Ethan immediately, but White is playing the long game. Watching Harper endure, zombie-like, discussions about Jack Dorsey’s barrel saunas, contemplating whether she should say anything about that condom, is electric. Plaza should, and likely will, win plaudits for her role as Harper, but Meghann Fahy is every part her equal as Daphne, simultaneously repressed and a little obnoxious.
The budding romance between Portia and Albie is going equally as bad. They’ve accidentally fallen into a game of one-upmanship with each other. Albie falls for Lucia , while Portia picks-type Jack . I’m not sure Mike White has an ear for the English as he does for Americans, but Jack’s observations of Sicilian life – guys keep grabbing his arse, and did you know they have sex on the streets in Palermo? – do add a pleasing Essex sleaze to the all-American proceedings.
