as an English nurse named Lib who is charged with observing a young girl named Anna, who hasn't eaten for months. Various people in the small Irish town believe she is surviving on manna from heaven, which is what Anna too believes.
During her observations, Lib hears Anna reciting certain prayers, which she has been told will help free her brother's soul from purgatory. She also learns that the last meal Anna ever ate was communion, adding to the religious fervour around her. Anna and Lib grow closer, too, and suddenly Lib realises how she has been surviving: her mother has been passing her chewed up food during their good night and good morning kiss, the way a mother bird feeds a chick. When confronted by this, Anna's mother does not confess; it's too late anyway, as Anna now refuses even these 'kisses'.
Lib then concocts a plan: she gives Anna milk laced with the opioids that she herself takes, telling her they will kill 'Anna' but that she will be reborn as a new little girl named Nan. Lib leaves her unconscious in the care of William by a small secret lake. While the rest of the family is at a special church service, Lib burns down their house, even allowing herself to be injured.
