Discover the surprising origins of the western film genre, as the world's first western film, 'Kidnapping by Indians', was actually filmed in Blackburn in 1899. The film was recently restored by the British Film Institute, shedding light on the evolution of British Cinema.

Made popular by the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, westerns are a film genre that have grossed billions of dollars in their lifetime. Most associated with Hollywood and big movie productions with big household names, but the world's first western was actually filmed in none other than Blackburn.

According to Holman, an archive of Edwardian films were discovered in Northgate, Blackburn, back in 1994 which were essential in understanding the evolution of British Cinema.Mitchell and Kenyon Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon were filmmakers who documented the every day lives of Britons, travelling the country to create their art. The pair released films under the trade name of Norden and had premises at 21 King Street and 40 Northgate until 1913 when their business went bust.

Their film catalogue includes lives in the workplace, football matches, public processions and astonishing glimpses into the mundanity of Edwardian Britain. They add: "The Indians set fire to the camp and a gunfight ensues during which one of the girls is rescued by cowboys. It may be a scene from a well-known show."Jamie Holman In 2019, artist Holman discovered the short film and noted that the date would make it the very first western. Kidnapping by Indians features mill workers in the Lancashire town and pre-dates the Great Train Robbery by four years.
