25,000 music fans will descend on Wythenshawe Park as it hosts a live gig for the first time ever at the weekend and if it's a success there could be more

The final preparations are underway at historic Wythenshawe Park ready for the arrival of some 25,000 music fans to roar the return of homecoming star Noel Gallagher this weekend. It's the first time this huge Greater Manchester parkland has ever hosted a live gig on this scale - and rather fittingly it will be from a rock star who grew up just down the road in Burnage.

The gig site, which remains under wraps until the doors swing open to revellers at 2pm on Saturday, includes a large central stage with video screens, a food village with a range of food and drink operators, a VIP village, and even a couple of fairground rides. With the live entertainment starting from 3.40pm, and four support acts including Future Islands and Primal Scream, it is set to be a real festival atmosphere.

"We are setting this up to hopefully do more events like this in future at Wythenshawe, but obviosuly we need to see how this year goes. With the way that the events industry is going, there is a big appeal for a cheaper ticket to big concerts, where people can go home afterwards - seeing the big acts but more local to them is quite popular these days."

Organisers are encouraging ticket holders to be as green as possible with their travel arrangements and to walk and cycle or use public transport. Residents around the park have been leafletted to inform them of the traffic plans, and given a dedicated helpline if they encounter any problems. "I already know that bars and clubs in the area are staffing up for this gig, they've had a huge bounce on the back of it which is great. This is our flag, and we're looking forward to many years ahead at Wythenshawe."
