Malcolm Glazer's 'The Zone of Interest' wins Best International Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the 2024 Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards.
The Zone of Interest took home the top prizes at the 2024 Dublin Film Critics Circle awards, winning best international film, best director for Malcolm Glazer , and best screenplay. The film, which premiered in Ireland in February, is a unique and unsettling look at the family that ran Auschwitz. It has been a critical darling since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival a year-and-a-half ago, where it won second prize. It went on to win two Academy Awards in March.
This makes it the first British film to win the circle's top prize since Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake in 2016, and only the second since the awards began in 2006. The Zone of Interest is joined by other acclaimed Irish films receiving recognition, such as Rich Peppiatt's (who sadly passed away on the film's premiere day) film which won second place in the best Irish film category. The circle's vote highlights a strong year for Irish features, which has seen some underreporting. Other notable films include Kneecap and Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, which opened the Berlin International Film Festival. Pat Collins's That They May Face the Rising Sun, an adaptation of the John McGahern novel, also received acclaim.
