The Man Utd manager insisted the club is not in crisis after their latest defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.
A Premier League club was reveling in their transfer window activity. Supporters were outside the training ground to welcome a signing’s arrival and there was a record victory at a top-six club before the window had closed.
A championship challenge always seemed unrealistic. Currently, United are closer to the Championship. Ten Hag calmly claimed there was no crisis on Saturday. He must think the identity of United’s conquerors shields them. Arsenal, Brighton and an improved Tottenham all finished in the top eight last season. This is still the first time in 34 years that United have lost three of their first five league fixtures and crisis management was exercised to handle the Greenwood, Sancho and Antony issues. The Stretford End was half empty when Ten Hag approached it at full-time.
Had Facundo Pellistri started, United would have had a diligent winger to keep tabs on the terrific Tariq Lamptey with a settled middle trio. Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi admitted they “suffered” in the first 15 minutes as they attempted to fathom United’s shape-shifting. Once Danny Welbeck stroked the ball in on 19 minutes, Brighton’s lead was seldom in jeopardy.
De Zerbi expressed gratitude that he has two players per position to choose from. Only on Friday, Ten Hag enthused about the squad United had “constructed”. United had injuries to contend with but so did Brighton.
