The turkey propagation program should be restarted.
The Pa Game Commission turkey biologist admitted in 2017 that the PGC has known there is a decline in the wild turkey population since 2017: “Wild turkeys are in trouble” | Popular Science
Simply a travesty of unaccountability that, here we are six years later without a known cause and solution!Fishers, reintroduced by the PGC back in 1994-95 in Blair and Bedford counties to reduce porcupine population, are widely regarded as the single most serious threat to mature turkeys. Fishers live in the tree masts where turkeys roost. Fishers kill the turkeys on the roost. Very little evidence exists that the fishers eat turkeys, but clearly kill them. As soon as we saw the first fisher on our trail cams, we noticed a decline in the adult turkey population.
We no longer see turkeys both on camera and in person, but we see the fishers! No other predator is as damaging to adult wild turkey population as is the fisher. The PGC is responsible for allowing the demise of turkey population. The PGC’s parochial thinking to reintroduce the fisher in Penn’s Woods to control porcupine population. Their turkey propagation program should be restarted.
Trap/transfer flocks in places where turkeys cannot be hunted. Start a program that would allow people to donate money to buy turkeys of the age where they are likely to survive in the wild and stock them in places where needed. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
