Brexit: Theresa May blames MPs for chaos as she tells public 'I'm on your side'
Arrogant Theresa May tonight blamed MPs for derailing her Brexit timetable as she blasted the Commons for twice rejecting her deal.
“So far Parliament has done everything possible to avoid making a choice. All MPs have been willing to say is what they do not want.” Labour’s Lucy Powell, who is pushing for a soft Brexit, condemned Mrs May’s claim MPs have failed to decid what they want. Senior backbencher Yvette Cooper accused the PM of simply carrying on with the same plan “that she has put to this House twice and has been roundly defeated”.Pressure was building on Labour MPs in the party’s Leave-supporting heartlands who feel duty-bound to honour the 2016 referendum result.
The money was targeted at Leave-voting Labour constituencies to give communities a boost after leaving the EU. A shadow minister from a Leave-supporting area said it was “not looking good” for the PM “at present”, with “very few” Labour MPs expected to back her. So, today, I have written to Donald Tusk the President of the European Council to request a short extension of Article 50 up to the 30th of June to give MPs the time to make a final choice.
