Why stick around feeling powerless when you can crack on with achieving things outside Parliament?

was not a good prime minister. There’s no way around it. She believes in public service and hard work, but she didn’t achieve her own to-do list when in power., but on the “burning injustices” she listed on the steps of Downing Street. She made it all impossibly hard by throwing away her party’s majority on an election that she didn’t need to call. That doesn’t mean she hasn’t been an admirable politician. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

On the backbenches, she was warning about the impact of lockdown on such victims, who would be stuck at home with the perpetrators and even fewer opportunities to escape. She didn’t pick the issue up as a fashionable cause: she was part of the group of politicians who made it a mainstream concern and helped to articulate that any woman can be a victim. She didn’t drop it and move onto something else that caught her attention. It’s almost as though she actually cared about this stuff.

She has made the most of her time as a backbencher, showing up other former prime ministers who have considered it to be too boring and lonely a job and who would rather get out and earn more money .: one of her best was the question she asked of Boris Johnson as the Partygate allegations were becoming increasingly serious.

This time, her party appears to be gearing up for a particularly unhinged time in opposition, which will compound the misery still further. Given she’s stuck it out in opposition, and then on the backbenches post-power, it’s quite an indictment of how powerless she thinks her party will be after the election that she thinks it might be best to move on.
