It is hard to believe this place once hosted vibrant industry and deadly sectarian violence
Dirty Linen is laid bare in a landscape of loss.
Two lonely benches overlook Kernan Lough, where Joe Toman, a joiner, once fished in a boat he built himself, and Jimmy Feeney also sought solace fishing in his boat. Jimmy won an All-Ireland senior boxing title in the National Stadium in 1975, then two days later witnessedgunmen murder his father, John Michael, and Joe in Bleary Darts Club, an old weaver’s cottage. He died by suicide in 2007. Only grass grows where the clubhouse stood. These were our killing fields.
In Seapatrick, metal silhouettes of workers line the lane down to Hayes’s mill. All that’s left is a redbrick gable, whose ghost sign seems to say No King. A housing estate across the road has a shrine-like mural to the UVF, which killed more than a dozen Catholics locally. Grass has grown over the site of Bleary Darts Club, an old weaver's cottage, where on April 27th, 1975, the UVF murdered three men and injured another in a gun attack. Photograph: Bryan O’Brien
