It could be worth having a complete break and leaving your phone at home when you jet off this summer as many providers are now charging roaming fees for using your phone in the EU
BE PREPARED: Many providers now charge roaming fees for using your phone in the EU
Using a mobile phone abroad is not as straight forward as it used to be. Before jetting off on holiday, it’s worth checking your network’s policy on using your phone outside the UK. ‘Roaming’ is when your phone connects to a mobile network in another country and allows you to use your calls, data and texts as if you were at home. Before Brexit, UK travellers could use their monthly bundle in 30 destinations in the EU and EEA at no extra charge – however, a number of providers have now brought in a nominal charge.
Of the big four UK networks, only O2 still allow free roaming in the European Union, while EE, Vodafone and Three have introduced fees. All other UK providers piggyback off these networks but their terms and conditions can vary slightly.Even if you are able to use your phone in the EU without additional charges, don’t get caught out by your network’s ‘fair use’ policy. Many providers cap the amount of data you can actually use abroad, regardless of your monthly allowance in the UK.
If you go over this limit, you face being charged for each addition MB. To help navigate this treacherous sea,Roaming in Europe costs EE contract customers £2.29 per day . For pay-as-you-go customers it costs £2.50/day . The fair use limit is 50GB. Find out more
