The folks at Games for Change also reach out to the community through its Games for Change Student Challenge. Middle or high school students are encouraged to think about problems they want to improve in their communities, and how gaming can play a role in making on-the-ground change. Participating students must use a free platform like Scratch or Unity so there are no barriers to entering the competition.

While I don’t want my son staring at a screen all the time, video games can have a positive impact on his problem-solving. It’s nice to know that his librarian understands that kids want to play video games, and that pointing them to good ones developed with a positive message can be beneficial to their learning and growth. And now that I know, and you know, that they exist, we can all encourage other children to brainstorm creations of their own based on everyday challenges and social problems.
