The Government needs to do more to support these vulnerable families and that means investing more in young people
Thankfully, his suicide attempt was unsuccessful. But when his football team – one that we helped set up – found out about his condition in hospital, they all rushed to his side to support him. I’ve always been passionate about supporting young people. I grew up in socially deprived areas in Islington andfrom an immigrant family with two disabled sisters, so I know the importance of community support, such as more of a sense of community and friendly neighbours.
For example, we set up a project at Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, where we partnered the local council, Herts Sports Partnership, Services for Young People, School of Hard Knocks and a big local housing association called Clarion.
