Mourning for the Queen is helping us grapple with uncomfortable truths 'This conversation is unmediated by commercialism or politics. No elected head of state could achieve that' ✍️ IanDunt for ipaperviews

Monarchy isn’t real. It’s a structure which allows the nation to have a conversation with itself. And that queue is part of the conversation

The cack-handed ostentatious mourning of corporate brands provides a good example of the latter category. No one could possibly have predicted that Center Parcs would have played a lead role in the Queen’s mourning period, but there they are. They barrelled towards the spotlight, providing a masterclass in baffled cowardice and reaching ever greater heights of cognitive and organisational failure.

The same thing happens in the press and in Parliament. There’s not the slightest sense that people have put any thought into what is happening. There’s absolutely no indication of introspection.pile of preening brain guff from David Frost, the former Brexit negotiator, about “the historic partnership between monarchy and parliament”. Not one mention about the fact that the government he served lied to the Queen and then unlawfully prorogued parliament.

It’s in everyone’s interest to wallpaper that crowd. Critics of the monarchy can brand them as lunatics. Supporters of the monarchy can brand them as to-a-person hardcore royalists. But as professor of psychology Stephen Reicher, crowds like this don’t have one character, much as we want to impose one. Some will be diehard supporters, some surprised by how personally moved they’ve been, some simply curious, some wanting to be part of a historic moment.Monarchy isn’t real.
