Play-by-play announcer Bill Schoening has tales to tell, songs to sing — and four championship rings.
Not only was it a job covering a professional sports team, but the Spurs had just won a championship two years earlier, and Tim Duncan was entering his prime. One bump along the way occurred a few seasons back when, in an effort to sell more courtside seats, the team moved Schoening and his microphone up to the second level of the arena. He said being further from the action makes calling the game more challenging. He can’t see if guys are elbowing each other more aggressively than usual or hear things said to — and by — the refs.
This season means big changes for the games Schoening is calling, with the Spurs in rebuild mode and having so many young, inexperienced players on the roster. He's got other projects in the works, too. In March, he published a first book,"Stories, Sports, and Songs: Tales and Tunes by a Play-By-Play Lifer," a collection of stories covering his life from Philadelphia to small-town radio stations to UT and the Spurs.
