'I probably could make more money working as an Amazon delivery driver but it's all I know, it's not for the money'

New Hall Lane is one of Preston's most diverse streets bursting at the seams with a variety of offerings from around the world.

38 years ago, Rashid's parents opened up the store on New Hall Lane and with the help of their five children, made it into a booming success with dozens of customer in and out of the doors ever day. The 55-year-old Preston man says for his family's shop, the run-up to Ramadan was the busiest time of year.

"We kept busy and had plenty of family around to help us so we coped well. Now, I'm the last man standing, after my parents retired, I was the only one left to take it over." "Everybody wants the one stop shop - supermarkets have it all now. Things like dates aren't even a big deal now, you get them all year round, they're readily available like anything else," He said.

But instead of the steady stream of customers coming through his doors, Rashid says the 'buzz' has transferred over to the supermarkets instead. "Even we find it very difficult at the moment, this year has been the most testing time it's ever been in the whole of my career. I think it's very, very tough, it's not for the faint hearted at the moment having that corner shop," Rashid added.
