Speaking at the event, President Michael D Higgins criticised 'damaging retail practices' which lead to produce being sold as loss leaders in retail outlets, below the cost of production
Over 100,000 people are expected to attend Bord Bia's gardening and food festival over the next five days which is being held on a 70 acre site.He said the shrinking number of commercial vegetable producers in the country needs to be supported.
He added that she was a very gracious lady anytime he met her and 70 years is a very significant contribution. Featuring 19 show gardens, 80 Irish food and drinks producers, retail outlets, cookery demonstrations and plant nurseries, the festival aims to attract more than 100,000 visitors over five days.
