The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development is calling on the government to introduce a new half-rate Fuel Allowance payment in Budget 2025
The official budget announcement revealing all of the measures will be made on the 1st of October, but ministers are already deliberating on what they hope to deliver.
They have published their pre-budget submission to Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys and among their recommendations is a half-rate Fuel Allowance payment. The Fuel Allowance payment is a means-tested €924 that can be given weekly or in two lump sums throughout the year. The allowance is usually paid from the end of September to April each year for 28 weeks and is included in weekly social welfare payments.
Also among their recommendations was increasing the income disregard for the Carer's Allowance - something they believe should also continue in future budgets.
