Thousands of people have objected to plans to reduce eligibility to school transport in North Lanarkshire.
carried out a public consultation on plans to increase the mileage requirements, as previously agreed as a budgetary measure. If implemented, this change is forecast to save the council millions of pounds annually.
However the legal requirements are that councils need only offer this for under 8s more than two miles away and children over 8 only qualify if they are more than three miles from their school, and the council agreed to hold the consultation on adopting this stance, as has already been done at 28 of Scotland’s 32 councils.
Running from February until May, the consultation saw more than 50,000 parents receive text messages encouraging them to share their views on the consultation website, while nine public meetings were also held across North Lanarkshire. The most common cause for concern was safety, either due to fears over the routes themselves or a perceived danger from people in the areas children would pass through, such as previous criminal incidents.
