The government has signed off on plans to reduce the welfare payment given to Ukrainian refugees in state accommodation from €232 per week to €38.80
About 27,000 social welfare recipients will see their payments significantly reduced following a new rule change.
Some 107,000 Ukrainians sought refuge in Ireland to escape the Russian invasion. Of those, about 86,000 remain here and of that number, just under 47,000 are currently living in state-funded accommodation. As of March this year, Ukrainians who arrived in Ireland were already receiving a reduced rate of €38.80 per week for an adult and €29.80 for a child. The new payment cut will target those who are still on the higher rate.
