ESB has said that around 5% of their smart meters are suffering with connectivity issues from the mobile signals they require to work accurately - leading to estimated bills

Smart meters use a mobile phone signal to relay information on electricity use, ensuring accurate bills instead of estimated ones.

ESB Networks, which is responsible for the installation of the new meters, has admitted up to 80,000 meters may suffer from “intermittent connectivity” issues due to weak mobile signals. This works out at around 80,000 meters that may have connectivity issues and a number of customers have reported overcharged bills.The majority of people are not using smart meters, even if they are installed.
