The comedian, actor and writer wanted to avoid ‘Disneyfication’ with his deeply personal new series. He’s succeeded– maintaining his dignity amid atrocious dialogue and wonky special effects., written and produced by the comedian-turned-actor, was a fascinating and moving retelling of the experiences of the Windrush Generation who left the Caribbean for a new life in Britain in the 50s.
Sisters Leah and Chantrelle and their super-religious friend Hosanna were introduced standing on the deck of the ship about to take them from the sunny Caribbean to what they imagined would be an even brighter existence in the UK. But when they reached their destination, the weather was gloomy. And they were immediately confronted by racist graffiti.
They were guilty of nothing other than being immigrants. And when Hosanna protested, the cops took umbrage and chucked her in the clink, too. This was what happened when you stood up for yourself.
