Former broadcaster Bill Brown and second baseman Bill Doran, who were on- and off-field...
Retired TV broadcaster Bill Brown, center, was notified by radio broadcaster Robert Ford, right, and team historian Mike Acosta of his election to the Astros Hall of Fame at Saturday's Fan Fest.Bill Brown believes he has a place in a room full of ballplayers. Some of the best to ever wear Astros uniforms will gather Aug. 12 at Minute Maid Park.
Brown more than belongs. His induction into the Astros Hall of Fame on Aug. 12 alongside longtime second baseman Bill Doran is further proof. The team’s longtime television play-by-play man will be the fifth non-player to enter the 26-person Hall. Hired prior to the 1987 season, Brown’s Astros career spanned 30 seasons, seven playoff teams, two ballparks and two Baseball Hall of Famers. Brown called three no-hitters, the 400th home run of Jeff Bagwell’s career and — in what many consider his most memorable call — Craig Biggo’s 3,000th hit.
“Even though it was one of my all-time favorite moments and I was pleased for him and the fans … In a technical sense, I do not think it was a good call,” Brown said. “I got caught up in the emotion of the moment and I got so emotional that I started doing radio on TV. You’re saying ‘Line drive to right-center field,’ well, you don’t do that on TV. Everyone can see where the ball is hit. I was falling all over myself in excitement.
