In January 2015 – the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz – on a bracing winter’s day, I visited the infamous camp as a pilgrim, not a tourist. The guide brought us to rooms filled with thousands of shoes, thousands of spectacles and a mound of human hair, stark reminders of what remained of the lives of more than a million Jews. I will never forget it.
It is invariably those who are at the receiving end of such horror who are most intent on not forgetting.
