Cork jockey Michael O'Sullivan injured in in chaotic final fence incident that saw five horses fall
Racing at Thurles was abandoned on Thursday because of a ‘medical emergency’ following an injury to jockey Michael O’Sullivan. The incident happened shortly after 2pm in the second race of the afternoon, the Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase, where five horses fell or were brought down at the final fence.
Cork native O’Sullivan and his Ger O'Leary-trained mount Wee Charlie were one of the five to fall or unseat and the medical team at the track made the quick decision to call the air ambulance. Racing had been delayed for 90 minutes until the abandonment as medical staff awaited the arrival of air support to bring the jockey to hospital. An IHRB update said: "Michael O'Sullivan was treated by the medical team on track at @thurlesraces prior to the air ambulance arriving. Due to the ongoing medical situation at the time, the Raceday Stewards made the decision to abandon the remainder of the card.Kazakh d'Arthel and Sean Flanagan were in contention when first to fall, while Andyourbirdcansing and Daniel King, Baltinglass HIll and Tiernan Power-Roche and Get It Right and Sean Aherne also exited.Cork born O’Sullivan shot to prominence in 2023 when winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham aboard Marine Nationale, also capturing Grade One glory with Barry Connell’s charge at Fairyhouse. O'Sullivan has ridden 14 winners in Ireland this campaign, as well as two in Britain. His last notable success came on Embassy Gardens in the Grade 3 New Year's Day Chase at Tramore. Horse racing fans have taken to social media to send their messages of support to O'Sullivan following the emergency as they hope for positive news on his condition.
